RARE, C1800 Georgian 'Countryman's' Sword Stick With Blued & Etched Blade From A British Infantry Officers Pattern 1796 Sword With Leather Form Papier-mâché Handle & Scabbard. Sn 12220 - 12220

Starting around 1725 in Europe, gilded papier-mâché (treated shredded & mashed paper)began to appear as a low-cost alternative to similarly treated plaster or carved wood in architecture. Patents appeared for treating laminated sheets of paper with linseed oil to produce waterproof panels in 1772. These sheets were used for building coach door panels, trays, chair backs, and structural panels. This original Georgian era sword stick’s handle and scabbard are made of the then innovative Papier-mâché which is has been waterproofed, coloured and formed to appear as leather bound wood. These types of sword stick were known as 'Countryman's'. The Papier-mâché is of surprisingly strong construction & undamaged. The handle is holed for wrist strap and a plaited leather wrist strap is present. The top of the handle has its original stitched and pinned leather cap. The scabbard has a brass conical end cap. The sword blade is from a British Infantry Officers Pattern 1796 Sword. The single edged steel blade with ‘T’ back & fullers is 28” length and is beautifully blued and etched (illustrated in image 2). The sword stick in its scabbard measures 36 ½” overall length. Price for this attractive Georgian Sword stick includes UK delivery. Sn 12220
