~ 1796 Pattern Other Ranks Light Dragoon Sabre ~
This pattern replaced the 1788 Light Dragoon sabre and was used throughout the Napoleonic wars by British light cavalry.
The blade is marked on the forte ‘OSBOR...’ for Osbourne. The remaining characters have worn away.
The sword comes with its steel scabbard which is marked 'Osbourne' on the upper ring.
The blade is stamped on one side with the letter ‘G’.
~ Dimensions ~
The blade length is 32.5 inches (82.5 cm) and the overall length of the sword is 37.5 inches (95.3 cm).
The overall length of the sword and scabbard is 38.5 inches (97.7 cm).
It weighs 1.9 kg.
~ Condition ~
The blade has some amount of pitting and many small nicks on the edge.
The grips leather has been replaced,
The suspension rings of the scabbard are both present.
The scabbard had a major hole on one side which was infilled with solder. There are two further unfilled perforations.
