~ French Gras Bayonet 1874 Model Dated January 1884 with Matching Scabbard ~
This antique Model 1874 French Gras bayonet is dated 1884. The blade is signed in cursive writing on the top flat edge. It says "M're d'Armes de St Etienne janvier 1884", which translates to "Manufactured at the Armory at St. Etienne January 1884". The ricasso is stamped 'R9' and the guard has serial number '492'. The scabbard serial number is '33313'(?).
The hand grips are solid wood with solid connection rivets, the crossguard or hook like part is steel, with the upper guard being the muzzle-ring that fits over the barrel, by forming a hooked "blade breaker" quillon. The blades are very well made steel that were very sturdy for thrusting, they have 3 edges, with the top two having a flat portion where the writing and date are.

The bayonet is 25.5 inches (64.5cm) long with the blade measuring 20.5 inches (52cm).
The scabbard is 21 inches (53.5cm) long.
~ Condition ~
The general condition of the bayonet is good. The grip is slightly worn and the guard has signs of rust. The scabbard is worn. The blade is clean and shiny.
