The 5cm leichter Granatenwerfer 36 (5 cm leGrW 36) was a light mortar used by Nazi Germany during World War II.
They had a maximum range of 450 metres and the 5cm round was comparable in power to a large fragmentation grenade.
They were originally intended to be issued one per rifle platoon throughout the Wehrmacht but only 26,000 were ever produced. Production was terminated in 1941. It was gradually withdrawn from front line service by 1942, but available mortars remained in use until 1945. They continued to be popular for the remainder of the war, as they could easily transported by two men, and provided the Infantry with a hitting power and range capability greater than any other weapon readily available at the squad or section level.
The base has a width of 18 inches (45.7cm), a depth of 11 inches (27.9cm) and a height of 20 inches (50.8cm). The mortar shell has a length of 8.5 inches (21.5cm). The set weighs 14.2kg.
The set has been preservered extremely well and remain in an overall good condition. The knobs and triggers are all extremely responsive.
