Description

Victorian British Militia Cavalry Private Purchase Enfield .577x .450 Calibre Carbine With WD Marks (- 12164

In the Victorian era it was common practice for Officer’s & Other Ranks of Volunteer & Militia Units to privately purchase their own weapons to supplement their limited supply of issued weapons. Privately purchased Martini Henry rifles & carbines were manufactured by quality gunsmiths using genuine Enfield manufactured parts. This is an excellent, original Militia Cavalry .577x .450 carbine manufactured with Enfield parts. It has all original woodwork in excellent condition. The wood is impressed with inspection marks and with serial number ‘20860’ (We have another private purchase Martini Henry militia carbine with consecutive serial number ‘20859’ in stock which we acquired together with this example, see stock number 12163). This carbine has a flip up rear sight, winged blade fore sight, steel butt plate and cleaning rod. The butt plate and lever have War Dept ‘WD with arrow’ marks. The lever also has an Enfield inspection mark. The barrel and breech have Victorian proof marks. The metal work is undamaged with even patina throughout. The steel barrel's rifled bore is clean. The action works correctly and is fully functional. As is the case with privately purchased weapons there are no weapon designation or model details stamped on this carbine. There are no visible manufacturer marks. As an antique, obsolete calibre weapon, no Licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Price includes UK delivery. Sn 12164
