~ Circa 1790 Private Purchase Short Land Pattern Brown Bess Flintlock Musket By Jover ~
This is a excellent example of a well preserved volunteer's (private purchase) 42 inch barrel Brown Bess made by Jover of London as per the stamp on the lock plate. The brass plate to the reverse is lightly engraved.
The top of the barrel is stamped with two proof marks and London.
The stock is decorated with a blank brass escutcheon plate.
The butt plate is made of blackened brass.
The lock works flawlessly and it is complete with its ramrod.
William Jover had his gun making business, Jover & Son, at 337 Oxford Street between 1784 and 1796 when it went bankrupt.

The barrel has a length of 42 inches (107 cm) with the musket having an overall length of 57.8 inches (146.5 cm). It weighs 3.5 Kg.

The musket half cocks, cocks and releases with a very strong spring. The barrel retains a decent thickness at the muzzle. The woodwork has a few cracks, the most visible one being in front of the lock plate as well as light scuffing.
