ORIGINAL ALL MATCHING NUMBERS INCLUDING CYLINDER, 1853, Cased, Rare Original Factory Engraved Colt .31 Calibre, Cap And Ball, Pocket Model of 1849 Revolver And Accessories. A 588 - A 588

The American Gold Rush of 1848 inspired Colt to produce pocket versions of their legendary 6 shot revolvers. This original Colt made .31 Calibre Cap and Ball, Pocket Model of 1849 Revolver is in superb condition with nice patina throughout and has attractive undamaged walnut grips. It has a 4” barrel and measures 9” overall length. The bore is clean with crisp rifling. The left side of its frame is stamped 'Colts Patent' and the barrel’ Address Saml Colt New York City’. The cylinder is stamped 'Colts Patent’ & ‘No. 68957. It has matching serial numbers '68957' stamped on its frame trigger guard and butt. The serial number dates the pistol’s production date to 1853. The steel frame, trigger, and nickel plated brass grip frame are deeply engraved with a foliate design and scroll work. The cylinder has the typical die rolled scene depicting a stage coach driver routing hold up men with his Colt revolver. The grip frame retains much of its original nickel plating. All engraving was performed at the time of production by the Colt factory. These weapons were expensive prized possessions in the period. An almost identical Pocket Model Of 1849 with the same deep engraving is illustrated on page 46 of the book ‘The History Of Colt Firearms’ by Boorman. The pistol has a small bead foresight and captive lever ram rod. The weapon has a nice tight action and works perfectly as it should. It is contained in its attractive, original, tailor made, wood case. The case is lined with red velvet and has compartments which snugly fit the weapon with additional compartments for accessories. The accessory compartments contain a copper and brass black powder flask, a Colt’s Patent marked double ball & bullet mould, a small quantity of .31 calibre lead balls / bullets, an empty percussion cap tin with green paper label ‘W&C Eley London Expressly For Colt Pistols’ and a steel tool. All of the case's metal fittings are brass, including the hinges and 2 clasp fasteners. The single central lock of the case is also brass. (At some time in its history the key has been lost). On top of the lid, in its centre, is an attractive, void 2” diameter plate. Another nice feature of this piece is that the inside of it’s lid has original manufacturer’s instructions for use. Price for this superb, rare piece includes UK delivery. NB As an antique cap and ball revolver, no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. A 588
