Mid 1800's Constabulary .650 Carbine Calibre Percussion Police Musket By Deane’s London ( Later Deane Adams & London Armoury Co) With Lovell's Patent Catch For Constabulary Bayonets. Sn 13326 - 13326

This is a mid 1800's Police 'Constabulary' percussion musket. It measures 42 ¼” overall with a 26 ½” clean smoothbore barrel which is .650 carbine calibre. It has excellent all original wood and metal work. The plain steel lock is engraved 'Deane’s London' (most likely George & John Deane recorded as gun and pistol makers at 46 King William Street 1838-45 and at 30 King William Street between 1846-51 as Deane & Co later to become the famous Deane Adams & Deane C1853. In 1857 the famous gunsmith Robert Adams is recorded as having an interest in the business which later was taken over by the London Armoury Co. See page 153 of British Gunmakers Vol 1 by Brown). The carbine size musket has a heavy military hammer, brass butt plate, trigger guard, fore end block and ram rod mounts together with original steel ramrod. In 1843, as a result of a select committee meeting investigating the shortcomings of the previous Hanovarian version bayonet Lug's in service with the British Army, the Lovell's Lug was introduced. The Lug with Lovell's 'Catch' was introduced into the British Army in 1884 and applied to Constabulary bayonets up to the mid 1850's. (See page 98 and 99 of British & Commonwealth Bayonets by Skennerton & Richardson). This rifle is fitted with the correct Lovell's bayonet catch. The cocking and firing mechanisms work perfectly. Price includes UK delivery. NB As an antique percussion musket no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 13326
