VERY RARE, AMERICAN-MEXICAN & CIVIL WAR ERA U.S. Army Eli Whitney M1841 .54 Ball Calibre Muzzle Loading Percussion 'Mississippi' Rifle. Sn 13325 - 13325

The Whitneyville Armoury USA was founded 1798 in New Haven Connecticut by Eli Whitney (in 1888, the Whitney Arms Company was sold to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company). When Eli Whitney Blake took over management of the Harpers Ferry Armory in 1842, he set about tooling up under his new contract from the U.S. government for making the model 1841 percussion rifle. The M1841 Mississippi rifle is a muzzle-loading percussion rifle used in the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. The nickname "Mississippi" originated in the Mexican–American War when future Confederate president Jefferson Davis was appointed Colonel of the Mississippi Rifles, a volunteer regiment from the state of Mississippi. Colonel Davis sought to arm his regiment with the Model 1841 rifles. This is a superb, very rare, U.S. Army marked Whitney M1841 Mississippi rifle. This example has all original wood stock and metal work with brass fittings including its original hinged brass patch box in the stock. It measures 48 ¾” overall with a 33” round steel barrel which has a clean bore with crisp multi groove Henry rifling. The weapon is fitted with blade fore sight and notched block rear sight. It has a heavy military hammer, brass butt plate stamped ‘US’ (Army), steel sling swivels, brass barrel bands & fore end block. As is common with thses rifles the ram rod is absent. The side plate is marked with the 'U.S’ army stamp together with manufacturer name ‘E. Whitney’. The breech has a very faint U.S. Military inspector’s mark which is ‘U.S.’ above what appears to be ‘JCB’. The weapon’s cocking and firing actions work perfectly. Price for this excellent Mexican and American Civil Wars era rifle includes UK delivery. NB As an obsolete calibre antique firearm no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 13325
