Description

Victorian 1845 British Enfield Tower .65" Bore Percussion Cavalry Carbine Regiment Marked 'AYC' To The Scottish Ayrshire Yeomanry Cavalry With Nipple Protector & Chain. Sn 10990. - 10990

The Ayrshire Yeomanry is the senior yeomanry regiment in Scotland and the seventh yeomanry Regiment in Great Britain. It was formed in 1793, at the onset of the French Revolutionary Wars, by Archibald, Lord Kennedy. The Regiment was then known as the Ayrshire Yeomanry Cavalry. In 1838, there was a general disbandment of Yeomanry Regiments, Only two - the Ayrshire Yeomanry and the Lanarkshire Yeomanry - were retained in Scotland. But the revival of enthusiasm for volunteer military service, which was inspired by the Crimean War, regularised the yeomanry structure in the UK. This is an excellent original, 1845 dated British Enfield [Tower Lock] made Cavalry Carbine To the Ayrshire Yeomanry Cavalry. It has all original wood work & metal work throughout. It has a heavy military percussion dolphin hammer and the lock plate is crisply stamped Crown VR (Victoria Regina) & 'Tower' (Enfield) with '1845' date. It's 20" barrel (36" overall) has a .65" smoothbore. The top of the barrel and wood stock are stamped with proof/inspection marks together with 'BO with arrow' (British Board Of Ordnance)). It has a fixed rear sight and small blade fore sight. It has an under barrel captive swivel ramrod with end cap. The carbine also has brass forend block, trigger guard with extended tang & butt plate. The tang of the butt plate is marked 'AYC' (Ayrshire Yeomanry Cavalry) over 'D59'. It is complete with steel saddle bar & ring and nipple protector with brass chain. It cocks & dry fires perfectly as it should. Price includes UK delivery. NB As an antique percussion Carbine no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 10990
