1862 British Enfield Tower MK II** 3 Band .577 Calibre Snider Conversion 3 Band Rifle Regiment Marked ’V Ex3’ To The 3rd Militia Volunteer Battalion Essex Regiment & Original Leather Sling . A 557 - A 557

A large number of small Rifle Volunteer Corps had been formed in the county of Essex as a result of an invasion scare in 1859. In 1881 two units of ancient militia, the East Essex Militia and the Essex (Rifles) Militia, were re-designated the 3rd and 4th (Militia) Battalions of The Essex Regiment. In 1884 they formed part of the River Column under Lord Wolseley which struggled up the Nile to relieve Khartoum and save General Gordon from the Mahdi, who had overrun the Sudan. For this campaign the Regiment was awarded the battle honour "Nile, 1884-5". Both regular Battalions and elements of the Volunteer Battalions, served in the South African War (1899-1902), the Regiment gaining the battle honour "South Africa, 1889-1902". When the breech loading Snider mechanism was introduced in 1866, many Enfield percussion long arms were converted to the new system. This is an excellent example of the Enfield Snider conversion 3 Band Rifle Marked to The 3rd Essex Volunteers. The side plate is stamped With Queens Crown (Victoria) and by the manufacturer 'Enfield 1862'. It has excellent all original wood work, brass butt plate, fore end block, bayonet bar and trigger guard with extended tang. The rifle also has its original ramrod, ladder rear sight stamped with Enfield inspection marks, block and blade fore sight and sling swivels. The butt plate tang is stamped ‘V Ex3’ to the 3rd Militia Volunteer Battalion Essex Regiment & weapon number ‘465’. The rifle is fitted with an original leather sling. The barrel has a clean bore crisp rifling and is stamped with Victorian proof and WD marks. The breech is stamped ‘Snider’s Patent’ with arrow trademark ‘BSA Co’ and MK II** model designation . The breech tang is stamped with matching ‘Ex3 Mark’. Total length is 54 ½” with a 36 1/2" barrel. The firing action works perfectly. This is an antique obsolete calibre rifle and no licence is required to possess it in the UK if retained as a part of a collection or display. The price includes UK delivery. A 557
