    Victorian 1860 British Enfield MK II*Snider .577 Calibre Cavalry Carbine Regiment Marked ’20 263’ To 20th Hussars . Sn 13312 - 13312

The 20th Hussars was a Cavalry Regiment of the British Army. The Regiment was originally raised in Bengal by the East India Company as the 2nd Bengal European Light Cavalry in 1858, for service in the response to the Indian Rebellion. It was renamed the 2nd Bengal European Cavalry in 1859 and in 1862, while based in Mathura, it was transferred to the British Army and renamed the 20th Regiment of Hussars. It became the 20th Hussars in 1877. The regiment remained on the North West Frontier and participated in the Ambela Campaign in autumn 1863 and the Hazara Expedition in October 1868 before moving to England in 1872. The Regiment then served in Ireland, The Sudan and WW1. After service in Ww1 it was amalgamated with the 14th King's Hussars to form became the 14th/20th King's Hussars in 1922. This is an original British .577 Snider Patent Cavalry Carbine by Enfield to the 20th Hussars. The Snider action was introduced to British service in 1866 and muzzle loading Enfield Carbines were converted to allow the use of the .577 calibre brass cartridge. They remained in use until the Martini Henry was introduced. This carbine has a 19 ½” round steel barrel with clean bore and 3 groove rifling. It measures 37 ½” overall length. The metal work has even patina throughout. It has a brass butt plate & trigger guard. The butt plate is Regiment marked ‘20’ to the 20th Hussars and weapon number ‘263’ together with inspection mark (illustrated). The original woodwork is undamaged and has just the bumps and bruises to be expected with age and use. The wood has a diamond ink cartouche which contains the letters ‘DC’ and has an Enfield ink roundel above number ‘1’. The side plate is dated 1860 and is marked Enfield, Crown VR (Victoria Regina), together with inspection mark. The breech and barrel have proof/ inspection marks together with ‘MK II*’ designation. The action is strong and works as it should. It has its original fixed foresight and adjustable rear ladder sight. Price for this Regiment marked carbine includes UK delivery. NB As an obsolete calibre weapon no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as a part of a collection or display. Sn 13312
