Enfield Snider Patent MK II** .577 Calibre Artillery Carbine Breech Marked 'DS14'. Sn 10574

This is an excellent original example of the British .577 Snider Patent Artillery Carbine. The Snider action was introduced to British service in 1866 to allow the use of the .577 calibre brass cartridge and many rifles and carbines were converted to the Snider system. They remained in use until the Martini Henry was introduced. This Snider patent carbine has a 21 1/2" barrel and measures 40" overall. It's steel barrel has a clean bore and crisp rifling. It has a brass butt plate which is WD marked, fore end block & trigger guard with extended tang. The woodwork is all original & undamaged. The stock is impressed 'B20' and number '685' together with WD mark. The side plate is crisply marked 'Crown Enfield' and '1868' Date together with inspection marks. The breech cover is crisply marked with WD and inspection marks together with 'II**' pattern designation. The breech tang is stamped 'DS14' (Skennerton's book Broad Arrow refers to 'DS' being the designation for either the South African 'Driscoll's Scouts' or the British Regimental 'District Staff' and British Territorial Association '14' as being 'Cambridge & Isle Of Ely'). The barrel is marked with Victorian proof/inspection & WD marks. The action is strong and works as it should. It has a fixed foresight and flip up ladder rear sight. It is also fitted with, bayonet lug, sling swivels, nipple protector with brass chain and has it's original cleaning rod. Price for this excellent Carbine worthy of further research includes UK delivery. NB As an obsolete calibre weapon no licence is required to possess this weapon in the UK if retained as a part of a collection or display. Sn 10574
