Description

An English sidehammer percussion pistol of large size and calibre, made for British Government use by J Harding & Son of London and dated 1840. These pistols made by J Harding are known to have been carried on Mail Coaches and by Police / revenue services through most of the 19th century. This particular example, although not engraved with any mail coach or unit markings, was quite likely carried on board a Mail Coach or by a Customs or revenue officer. Approx .65 calibre. Circa 1840 - 1845. Action in good crisp working order. The lockplate is engraved with a crown and a broad arrow (denoting British Government use) and the name and date "J HARDING & SON, 1840". The barrel is also engraved with a crown and a broad arrow and the name "J HARDING & SON, BORO. LONDON". Condition is very good to excellent. Complete with its original horn tipped wooden ramrod. Overall length 15.5 inches. Ref 9475. J. Harding was under royal contract to make pistols for the Coach Guards for Her Majesty's Mail Coaches, he is also known to have made pistols, blunderbusses and carbines for the police and British revenue services. James Harding is recorded as Gunmaker to The General Post Office. Ref 9475.
