A super pair of good Quality French Naval officer's all brass Flintlock Blunderbuss Pistols of the American Revolutionary war era. Manufactured circa 1760-1780 in France. The barrels each engraved underneath with an anchor and the original ship's name "Vengeur Du Peuple Toulon". The Vengeur du Peuple was a 74 gun ship of the line of the French navy. Funded by a donation from the chamber of commerce of Marseille. She was launched in 1762 as Marseillois. This ship took part in various naval operations of the American Revolutionary war in Admiral dEstaing's squadron, duelling against the British ship HMS Preston in a single-ship action on 11 August 1778, taking part in the Battle of the Chesapeake where she duelled HMS Intrepid and supporting the flagship Ville de Paris at the Battle of the Saintes 9th-12th April 1782. The barrells are approx 4 inches in length. The pistols are 8 inches overall. Some decoration to the sideplates. Both actions are very crisp and in full working condition. A superb pair of Revolutionary war period flintlock officer's pistols with a known history. Ref 8004.
