Description

1815 (The Year The Battle Of Waterloo Was Fought), George III, Police/ Constabulary Ebony Tipstaff With Hand Painted Arms & Royal Cypher Marked ‘No.1’. Sn 11547 - 11547

The earliest record of the Tipstaff (Warrant Stick) was in the 14th century. The name derives from the early origins of Policing when Warranted Officers would apprehend a criminal with the help if necessary of a tipped staff. The staff would be made of wood or metal and were not only a means of self defence but the tips of the staffs would bear symbols of their authority. Modern Police Truncheons originated from these Tipstaffs. This is an excellent original George III era Tipstaff. The body is made of heavy ebony tapered and shaped for grip. The top of the staff has a brass lanyard ring and has a plaited cord attached. The staff has beautiful hand painted decoration featuring the Arms of Great Britain, shield crest with ‘No.1’ and ‘1815’ date (The year that the Historic Battle Of Waterloo took place). The staff also has ‘GIIIR’ (George III) Royal Cypher. All of the staff’s Gold, Green & Red decoration is vivid. Price for this excellent piece of Policing history which is 200years old includes UK delivery. Sn 11547.
