Description

RARE, Cased WW2 German MG34/42 Machine Gun Section & Artillery Rkr 31 RICHTKREIS 31 Aiming Circle Optical Sight/ Firing Predictor For Directing Multiple Guns With Original WW2 1942 Dated Instruction Booklet. OPT 816 - OPT 816

This instrument is known as a Richtkreis 31 (Rkr 31) and is termed an aiming circle. It was used with both artillery and fixed-mounted machine guns (MG-34/MG-42) to measure horizontal and vertical angles in preparation for indirect fire, e.g. over a hill or onto a reverse slope. The sight was fitted onto the standard German army wooden optic tripod rather than gun mounted to allow the user to predict and direct fire of multiple guns. The sight’s periscope is fitted to the aiming circle body by means of a dovetailed slide. Its function is merely to raise the line of sight, it has no magnifying power. The telescope has an adjustable focusing eyepiece, with a leveling bubble on top. To the left of the telescope is a spherical level by which the head can be leveled. The graduated angle-of-sight mechanism can be rotated and the traversing mechanism is graduated. The instrument & periscope bear the maker’s name Hildebrand Wichmann Werke, Freiberg =SA and it retains it’s original green paint finish. The periscope is numbered 89427 and the aiming circle 89438. The instrument is accompanied by its excellent undamaged original 87 page instruction booklet in German text. The booklet is illustrated with diagrams & photographs and obviously covers all aspects of construction and use of the instrument. The booklet’s grey cover is dated ‘1942 Berlin’. The Aiming Circle, Periscope and Booklet are all contained in their original wooden transit case which is divided internally into 2 sections. The case with hinged lid has steel riveted reinforced edges and riveted steel strap rings to 2 sides. The lid has a sprung steel securing strap with small webbing tab. The steel strap locks onto a small lug on the body. The front of the case has a hinged section with hook fastener which opens to provide storage for accessories in the lower section of the case. The top of the lid is marked ‘Rkr.31’ in stencilled white paint. The inside of the top section of the case has 2 steel plates marked ‘Ausblick’ and Vor Einsetzen des Rkr. Magnetnadel festlegenl’ there is also hand written ink lettering ‘A6EVT1U2/X1’. The top section has a fixed bcentral post to support the aiming circle and a steel frame section to support the periscope. Internally the lid also has a wooden block covered with webbing material with 2 press stud fasteners. The block has a series of holes which contain 4 bulbs of different sizes. Price for this rare cased WW2 Optical Instrument includes UK delivery. OPT 816
