VERY RARE, MATCHING NUMBERS, British Military Issue Greenes Model 1856 (1854 Patent) .54" Bore Maynard's Patent Breech Loading Carbine By Mass Arms Co Chicopee Falls USA. Sn 11387 - 11387

This scarce Carbine was manufactured by Mass Arms Co USA and purchased by the British Government for issue to British Cavalry. The carbines never saw Military service due to the perceived fragility of the cartridge ammunition. The carbines were put into storage in the Tower Of London Armoury while further work on a reliable cartridge was carried out. A fire at the Tower destroyed almost all of the carbines and British contract guns like this example are few and far between. The weapon has several inspection marks. The serial number '221' is located on the inside of the breech and it has matching number at the ribbed fore end. It has double triggers with an innovative twist ribbed fore end which releases the breech when the front trigger is depressed. It also features the Maynard's 1845 Patent 'tape primer system' with hinged cover (the tape primer operated in a similar fashion to toy cap guns with paper roll charges ignited when the hammer strikes and rotated to the following charge). The frame is crisply marked with U.S. (Greene's) 1854 patent detail together with Maynard's patent detail, Crown VR (Victoria Regina) and manufacturer Mass Arms Co Chicopee Falls USA 1856'. The weapon's steel fittings including butt plate, saddle ring block and blade foresight and ladder rear sight graduated to 600 yards are all excellent and undamaged. It's original wood stock is undamaged and is fitted with a hinged steel patch box stamped with British Inspection mark. It's loading & firing actions works perfectly. It has an 18" barrel (34 1/2" overall). The barrel is clean with original crisp & clean 3 groove rifling. Price for this rare carbine includes UK delivery. NB As an antique obsolete calibre rim fire carbine no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 11387
