Victorian London Fireman’s Axe By Sorby Sheffield With Silver Presentation Plaque ‘The Officers And Men Of The Paddington Fire Engine Station To Mr C.I Abud 1875’ With Original Victorian Black Morroco Leather Fireman’s Belt & Axe Holster. Sn 12143 - 12143

Following a multitude of ad-hoc firefighting arrangements and the Great Fire of London, various insurance companies established firefighting units to fight fires that occurred in buildings that their respective companies insured. As demands grew on the primitive firefighting units they began to co-operate with each other until, on 1 January 1833, the London Fire Engine Establishment was formed under the leadership of James Braidwood. With 80 firefighters and 13 fire stations, the unit was still a private enterprise, funded by the insurance companies and as such was responsible mainly for saving material goods from fire. Several large fires, most notably at the Palace of Westminster in 1834 and warehouses on Tooley Street in 1861, spurred the insurance companies to lobby the British Government to provide the brigade at public expense and management. In 1865 the Metropolitan Fire Brigade Act was passed, creating the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The Victorian Paddington Fire Engine Station was located on Hermitage Street and formed part of London’s Metropolitan Fire Brigade’s ‘A’ District (a contemporary photograph of Victorian London Fire Brigade Firemen With Their Horse driven Engine's is illustrated in image 2). This is an original Victorian Fireman’s Axe presented to a Paddington Fire Engine Station Fireman in 1875 together with its original Victorian black leather Fireman’s belt with axe holster. The heavy axe with lignum vitae hard wood shaft measures 15 ¼” in length and has a heavy steel axe head with spike securely riveted to the shaft. The axe head is stamped with manufacturer detail and trademark ‘I&H Sorby Sheffield’ (illustrated in image 2). The smooth wood shaft is undamaged and has hand carved grooves cut into it no doubt by the Victorian Fireman who owned the axe to offer a good grip when in use. One side of the axe shaft is mounted with a silver disc engraved with presentation detail ‘Presented By The Officers And Men Of The Paddington Fire Engine Station To Mr C.I Abud On Coming Of Age 1875’ (illustrated in image 2). The axe is complete with its original Victorian Fireman’s Morroco black leather belt. The belt is 2 ¼” wide and 41” length with a large white metal buckle. The belt is fitted with a removable leather axe holster which has a flap cover and clasp fastener. The holster has 2 belt loops to the rear. The belt is also fitted with an additional removable leather open ended attachment most likely for hanging a torch/ lantern or other piece of equipment. All leather and stitching are intact. Price for this excellent piece of fire fighting history worthy of further research includes UK delivery. Sn 12143
