Description

WW1 & WW2 Era Italian Model 1870 Carcano Rifle Knife Bayonet (Officially Shortened Vetterli Bayonet) & 1916 Dated Scabbard. Sn 10292

On entering WW1 Italy found itself short of arms and in order to facilitate supplies many of the old Vetterli Model 1870 bayonets were shortened and their hooked quillon removed to conform to the carcano rifle (see page 190 and 197 plate 437 of 'The Bayonet Book' by Watts & White). This is an excellent original Model 1870 knife bayonet for Carcano Italian Infantry Rifles and Carbines which were used through WW1 and into WW2. This Knife Bayonet is one of the Vetterli bayonets that had it's blade shortened and quillon removed for WW1 use. The bayonet has a 9 1/4 inch single edged fullered blade (14 1/4" overall). It has the correct crossguard with small muzzle ring and quillon removed. It also has the correct flat spring and steel button at the pommel which functions perfectly. The bayonet's slab wood grips are in excellent undamaged conditioned. The ricasso is stamped with a small inspection mark. The pommel is stamped 'C' and 'D' The bayonet is complete with original black leather scabbard with brass locket and chape. The leather of the scabbard is crisply impressed with '1916' date and 'A.C.T.'. The locket is stamped with a small 'za' mark. Price includes UK delivery. Sn 10292
