VERY RARE, '1964 ZULU THE MOVIE FILM WEAPON PROP NUMBER 8001' Original 1883 Dated London Small Arms Co Marini Henry MK II .577x450 British Service Rifle Suppled By Darnley's Theatrical Hirers With Original Reference Label. Sn 10669:1 10669:1

The Anglo-Zulu War was fought in 1879 between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. The iconic movie Zulu, made in 1964 starred Stanley Baker and introduced Michael Caine, in his first major role. The historical war film depicted the Battle of Rorke's Drift between the British Army and the Zulus in January 1879, where 150 British soldiers, many of whom were sick and wounded as patients in a field hospital, successfully held off a force of 4,000 Zulu warriors. 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded to the defenders of Rorke's Drift. The standard long arm of the British Army during the Zulu war was the Martini Henry Service Rifle. The movie was acclaimed for it's authenticity. Choreographers, wardrobe staff and Armoury advisors paid close attention to detail and the Company, Darnley's Theatrical Hirers supplied numbers of original Zulu War era weapons to the movie production team including a supply of original Victorian British Martini Henry Service Rifles. The South African Authorities required all of the weapons supplied to be marked and recorded with serial numbers. As a result stock numbers were applied to each weapon by armourers working on set. This is one of the original Victorian British Martini Henry MK II Service Rifle's supplied by Darnley's for use during filming of the movie. This example in the regulation .577x450 calibre was made in 1883 by the London Small Arms Company. It has all original wood furniture which has just the knocks, bumps and bruises to be expected with service use, battle re-enactment during filming of Zulu the movie and age. The metal work is undamaged and retains much of it's original finish. The right side plate is nicely stamped and dated by the manufacturer 'LSA Co' together with the combined 'LSA Co' trademark. It is also stamped with the Zulu Movie set applied weapon number '8001'. The stock has a nice clear LSA Co in roundel. The weapon has a steel butt plate which has a small native Egyptian or Nepalese inscription, bayonet bar, steel cleaning rod and sling swivels which are fitted with an original leather sling. The weapons loading and firing mechanism works as it should. Attached to the rifle is a cardboard label which describes the rifle's history. The rifle is complete with an original matching date triangular blade socket bayonet which fits the rifle correctly. The blade of the bayonet is straight and clean. The blade is dated '83' (1883) and has inspection marks. The bayonet is complete with it's original leather scabbard with brass locket and chape which have small inspection marks. The leather of the scabbard is impressed with British inspection/ ordnance marks. Price for this piece of British Army & Movie History includes UK delivery. NB As an obsolete calibre antique rifle no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 10669:1
