Boer War Era 1882/1885/1890 Pattern British WD Cavalry Troopers Sword Dated 1901 By Mole & Scabbard Matching Regiment marks ‘Y.BCK’ To The Buckinghamshire Imperial Yeomanry (Royal Bucks Hussars). Sn 11983 - 11983

These swords were designed during the period when the British army was continuing to argue on the merits of the ‘cut’ versus the ‘thrust’ of British cavalry blades. The hilt design was first introduced for the 1864 pattern, this was primarily a new hilt mated with the existing 1853 pattern blade (34 ¼” inches long 1 inches wide). The Maltese Cross motif cut into the knuckle guard is a distinctive feature of these swords (see page 101 of World Swords by Withers). On 13 December 1899, the decision to allow volunteer forces to serve in the Second Boer War was made. Due to the string of defeats during Black Week in December, 1899, the British Government realised they were going to need more troops than just the regular army, thus issuing a Royal Warrant on 24 December 1899. This warrant officially created the Imperial Yeomanry. The Royal Warrant asked standing Yeomanry Regiments to provide service companies of approximately 115 men each. In addition to this, many British citizens (usually mid-upper class) volunteered to join the new Regiment. Upon arrival, the Regiment including The Buckinghamshire Yeomanry was sent throughout the zone of operations and The battle honour 'South Africa' was awarded to them. On 17 April 1901, the Bucks Yeomanry was renamed as the Buckinghamshire Imperial Yeomanry (Royal Bucks Hussars) and reorganised in four squadrons and a machine gun section. This is a very good original, 1882/1885/1890 Pattern British Cavalry Troopers Sword & Scabbard to the Buckinghamshire Imperial Yeomanry (Royal Bucks Hussars). The Sword’s blade has just staining consistent with age. The ricasso is marked on both sides with WD and inspection marks. There are several 1800’s dates and Boer War era date ’11.8.01’ (11th August 1901). The knuckle guard has the correct Maltese cross motif and is stamped by the manufacturer ‘Mole’ together with Regiment mark ‘Y’ above ‘BCK’ to the Buckinghamshire Yeomanry. It has the correct boiled leather chequered scales secured by the correct 5 rivets. It is complete with its original steel scabbard with 2 fixed hanging rings. The scabbard is dated ‘2.89’ (Feb 1889) and has matching ‘Y.BCK’ Regiment marks. The scabbard has even patina throughout. Price includes UK delivery. Sn 11983
