Mortimer & Son Double Rifle Muzzel Loader .500 NP Rifles
A .500 Nitro Express Mortimer & Son rebounding hammer double rifle with providence circa (1880-90) recently re-proofed for NP Express (2001) making it a practical rifle of stunning africana, history. Jones patent rotary under lever , percussion fences, the sides of the action with plane engraving and deep patina showing all over, the well figured re-placement stock with silver oval and metal but plate including horn pistol grip cap, and rifle sling bolt, barrel with matted top rib showing Mortimer & Son 98 George street Edinburgh, including open iron sights for 100-200 yards.
The late Rolf Rohwer was a well known conservationist, professional hunter (PH) and wildlife biologist who hunted throughout Africa but extensively in Zambia and Tanzania. At the time of purchasing the Mortimer & Son in 1962- 1964 , from a man fleeing the troubles in the Congo , he was working as chief elephant cropping ranger for the Wildlife Department of Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). The rifle had been used for elephant in the Congo. During his time as a PH he guided among other’s the Wetherby Award winners: H.I.H Prince Abdorezza Pahlavi, Juan Luis Oliva de`Suelves, Andy Samuels Jr. also Ted Williams, Jack O'Conner, and Warren Page and many other illustrious hunters.
He was a multi – faceted man: who also discovered the first diamonds in Zambia for De Beers; his Engineering business built the bulk oil storage tanks for Shell ,and AGIP in Southern Africa and the TAZARA Railway. In Europe he co- founded Spain’s first drive through Safari Park. He developed Spain’s first Marine Shrimp Fram and invented the technology for their live transportation & that of other crustaceans by road and air throughout Europe.
Rolf's prolific career spanned over 4 decades, such diverse first hand experience as a PH & wildlife biologist, gave him the knowledge to become author and editor of many articles and most notably, his own book “Campfire Tales published by Safari Press USA”.
In particular he wrote a chapter on hunting in the Selous: "Classical Safaris - Saving Many by Killing a Few" in the book Wild Heart of Africa - The Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania. The German version was chosen as the "Hunting Book of the Year" in 2012. He also wrote many magazine articles and some scientific ones. He had PH license No. 3 in Zambia where he first started hunting, and was the first renowned American PH to achieve such a license. Whilst a towering man after surviving a lion mauling, and being hit by a Buffalo he passed away in January 2008.
Makers: Dickson & McNaughton of Edinburgh who hold the records of Mortimer & Son kindly estimated the manufacture date which was either not recorded or perhaps lost or destroyed; (Note there is only a No 39 which with its serial number is used in factory to keep components aligned for assembly).
