1897-1899 Dutch 9.4mm Calibre Double Action 5 Shot Police Revolver By Munts Amsterdam Made In Liege By Marechal Marked ‘LP’ to The Imperial German South African Police ((Landespolizei Deutsch Sudwest Afrika). Sn 11971 11971

John (Johannes) Munts was a well-known gunmaker in Amsterdam. His shop was for years located at the 110 Middenweg in that City. Around 1890-1900, Munts had his weapons made by various suppliers often at Liège. He had his own logo stamped on the guns and sold the weapons to various official Police and Governmental authorities. "Je Maintiendrai" (Princes of Orange's devise) was stamped on some Police revolvers. These Police revolvers were most often in the now obsolete 9.4 mm calibre and featured a safety lever. Joseph Marechal manufactured some of these weapons at Liege between 1897 to 1899. The South African Colonial German Police (Landespolizei Deutsch Sudwest Afrika) were issued with these Dutch weapons and Landespolizei weapons are usually found with an ‘LP’ mark (see pages 56-58 of German Small Arms markings By Gortz & Bryans). This is an excellent original Dutch John (Johannes) Munts 9.4mm Calibre revolver, marked "Je Maintiendrai" & made in Liege by Marcheal sometime between 1897-1899. It has 3 ¼” octagonal barrel with blade fore sight, smooth cylinder and undamaged chequered walnut grips. The metal work has even patina which has just the staining consistent with age. The cylinder is crisply stamped ‘LP’ To the Landespolizei Deutsch Sudwest Afrika. It also has Liege proof marks. The top of the cylinder frame is stamped "Je Maintiendrai” & “Joh. Munts Amsterdam”. The left side of the frame is stamped ‘J.Marechal Cheratte’ together with number ‘500’. The pistol has the correct safety lever on the left side of the frame which works as it should. It is side gate loading and the pistol’s firing mechanism works perfectly in both single and double action. The rifled barrel is clean with no pitting. The butt is fitted with Police lanyard ring. Price for this interesting revolver worthy of further research includes UK delivery. NB As an obsolete calibre antique revolver no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 11971
