PM Blasted Over Shotgun Licence Fees
It has come to light that an internal coalition battle has broken out because of a taxpayer subsidy for cheaper weapon licences fell into public on Tuesday when a Liberal Democrat Home Office minister insisted he is going to try and force through reforms despite having blocks in his way from the PM, David Cameron.
Norman Baker, the gentleman who has the key responsibility for shotgun certificates is madden by the idea of blocking plans to raise the overall cost of a gun licence, making the police search for over £17m from their operational budgets to subside them .
The PM who is a keen pheasant shooter and someone who regularly stalks deer, has apparently intervened in December by stopping the rise of a gun licence which has been capped at £50 since 2001; it costs £196 for the police to issue the licence.
The Guardian quote Baker saying ‘The current position is difficult to justify – why should the police subsidise the issuing of licences for firearms? We are driving greater efficiencies in the way the police handle applications, which will bring the cost of issuing down, but firearms users also need to pay a fair amount, which is not happening at the moment. I hope to be able to reach a sensible outcome in the near future."
With the decision to block the rise of a licence, the rise of life threatening incidents could be on the rise. Some police officers in the UK believe that the licence should be raised to around £200 due to the police force facing more cuts.
The UK has over 600,000 private gun licences, most of them coming from farmers or competitive shooters.
Chief police are urging for the subsidy to end, raising the cost of a licence to £92 but the chance of it to raise each year due to inflation, but the chance of it to raise each year due to inflation.
The home office are on side with the police, however it was blocked when it was taken to a cabinet subcommittee. Owen Paterson was to refuse the proposal and made contact with the PM, where he then stop it in its tracks.
Many Gun enthusiasts are furious with this decision of the rise of the cost saying that it will prohibit many occasion shotgun shooters.
