VERY RARE, Mid 1800's .59" Bore, Norwegian/ Belgian Military Kammerlader Breech Loading 'Under Hammer' Rifle. Breech Marked 'PJ Malherbe & Co, Liege'. A 554 A 554

The Kammerlader, or "chamber loader", was the first Norwegian breech loading rifle, and among the very first breech loaders adopted for use by an armed force anywhere in the world. A single-shot black-powder rifle, the kammerlader was operated with a crank mounted on the side of the receiver. This made it much quicker and easier to load than the weapons previously used. Kammerladers quickly gained a reputation for being fast and accurate rifles, and would have been a deadly weapon against massed ranks of infantry. The kammerlader was introduced in 1842, and it is thought that about 40,000 were manufactured until about 1870. While the first flintlock breech loading rifles, such as the Ferguson, were launched decades before 1842, Norway was the first European country to introduce breech loaders on a large scale throughout its Army and Navy, although the United States had been the first in the world with the M1819 Hall rifle. The kammerladers were manufactured in several different models and adopted by other Nations. The rifles used the Minié ball in paper cartridge ammunition. The Kammerlader loading sequence is as follows: 1. The hammer mounted under the weapon is cocked. 2.The crank is rotated, opening the breech. 3. A percussion cap is placed on the nipple. 4.A pre measured amount of gunpowder is poured into the breech, and the paper from the paper cartridge is used as wadding. 5.The bullet is placed in the chamber. 6.The crank is rotated forwards, locking the breech and making the rifle ready to fire. This is an original Kammerlader rifle. It has it's original woodwork which has the bumps and bruises to be expected with age and use. The fore section of the stock may have been contemporarily shortened at some time in it's life. It's loading and firing actions work perfectly and are nice and tight. It measures 47 1/2" overall with a 26 3/4" .59" Bore barrel. The bore is clean with crisp rifling. It has steel fittings in the white including barrel, action and trigger guard with extended tang. The butt plate is brass. The breech is Belgian manufacturer marked 'PJ Malherbe & Co, Liege'. The trigger guard and action have matching numbers '148' and it has several small inspection marks including 'Crown Above M'. It has a block and blade foresight and flip up fixed rear sight. It is fitted with rear sling swivel and forward sling swivel lug. It's chamber is clean. These weapons are very rare to find in their original breech loading form. Price includes UK delivery. NB As an antique black powder weapon no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. A 554
