Lucius W. Pond began making his Belt Revolvers around 1861, at a time when America was fighting itself in the American Civil War. For a year or so, Pond was able to produce a number of Belt Revolvers, in partial accordance with a patent issued to Abram Gibson on the 10th July 1860. In 1862, however, Smith & Wesson made a challenge to the Belt Revolver's production. Smith & Wesson's challenge centred on a patent issued for their 'Rollin White' patent, issued in 1855. The court ruled in favour of Smith & Wesson, however Pond (alongside Bacon, Moore and Warner whom were also found infringing that patent) was able to continue producing the Belt Revolver after meeting Royalty agreements with S&W. Ultimately production of Pond’s Belt Revolvers ended in 1870, the final few thousand of which were stamped, "Manuf'd for Smith & Wesson Pat'd April 5, 1855". This is a very good original example of Pond’s .32 Rim Fire 6 shot revolver. It has a 6” octagonal barrel and measures 11 ½” overall length. It is side gate loading and has a small brass blade foresight and notched hammer rear sight. The underside of the barrel, cylinder and grip frame are stamped with matching numbers ‘2031'. The revolver has a small shrouded trigger and the pistol's single action firing mechanism works perfectly. The cylinder is quickly removed for speed loading with a preloaded cylinder by removing its spring loaded detachable ram rod and cylinder retaining pin. The smooth rosewood grip has 4 contemporarily carved notches. There are no visible manufacturer or date marks on this revolver. The price includes UK delivery. NB As an obsolete calibre rim fire revolver no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as a part of a collection or display. Sn 13208
