~ A Rare Colt Pocket 1872 New Model ~
This model is particularly rare as it was the first model made by the Colt factory for the new metallic cartridges in a .38 rimfire. They were made up of newly delivered stock parts left over from the 1862 Police, 1862 Pocket Navy, and the 1849 Pocket together with scratch built parts specifically for this model. The gun marks a important transition between cap and ball and self contained cartridges. Only 3425 were produced.
The trigger guard is marked as .36 Cal, but the pistol is .38 rimfire (the markings were never removed from the parts in stock). The serial ranges were 1760 to 5605; this particular gun is numbered 2685 to the underside of the trigger guard, grip frame, forward frame and barrel so it is a fairly early produced model with all matching numbers. The revolver also has the 1871 and 1872 patent date on the left hand side of the frame, confirming this is one of the factory made pieces. '.38 cal' appears on the top left hand side of the trigger guard.
~ Dimensions ~
The barrel has a length of 3.5 inches (9cm), with a overall length of 9.5 inches (24cm). It weighs 603g.
~ Condition ~
The gun is in an overall good condition, with patina throughout and the rifling remains in the barrel. The gun retains all its original parts and finish, but it has some isolated patches of pitting.
It indexes, cocks and releases well.
