Remington 1879 Rifles
SOLD SOLDThis excellent rifle is a model 1879 Rolling Block usually referred to as the Argentinian model. These are often found in superb condition because the Argentinian contract was short lived as the Argentinians adopted the Mauser bolt action rifle in preference. The contract with Remington was reneged on and they were Arsenal refurbished, packed in grease and put into storage for nearly 100 years before an American dealer found them. You can tell the 1879 Rolling block as it has a hexagonal knox on the Receiver and probably the best rear sight on any Remington, some say copied on the Werndl rifle. This rifle has great woodwork, probably unfired bore and virtually 100% of the Arsenal reblue. The Remington patent numbers and dates are on the tang and the Remington cartouche is on the Butt with a Remington "R" stamp on the barrel. Calibre is 43 Spanish, very similar to the 11mm Mauser of the time and is an obsoleter calibre. If I were to restrict myself to one good example of a Rolling Block this would be the model I would choose. These were once easily available but now getting scarce as people appreciate them and their virtues are extolled by some really good recent books such as George Layman's "Military Rolling Block Rifles of the World" published 2010.
Carriage at cost and dependent on how it is shipped.
