RARE, Original, 1865 American Civil War, Sharps ‘New Model 1863’ 1852 Patent .52-70 Calibre Cavalry Carbine With 'RS Lawrence 1859 Patent' Rear Sight & Saddle Bar With Ring. Sn 11419:2. - 11419:2

The Sharps was one of the best known breech loading guns made by the Union during the American Civil War. The Carbine designed by Christian Sharps featured a vertical sliding block at the rear end of the barrel. The sliding breechblock allowed the Sharps to be loaded from the back end instead of from the muzzle end. This is a superb original .52-70, Civil War Era, Sharps Carbine. It has excellent undamaged wood and metal work throughout and has the correct Civil War vertical sliding block. The weapon has a mint bore with crisp rifling and the loading cocking and firing action works crisply. The barrel is marked with Sharps Rifle Manufg Co Hartford Conn address and ‘New Model 1863’. It is serial number C18244 which dates it to the last year of the American Civil war 1865. After the Civil War these carbines were used for hunting large game in particular Buffalo. This carbine is fitted front blade sight, graduated rear sight marked 'RS Lawrence Patented 15th Feb 1859'. The left side of the frame is fitted with steel saddle bar and ring. The butt is fitted with steel butt plate. The right stock plate is crisply marked 'C. Sharps Pat Oct 5th 1852' and the left with Sharp’s 1848 Patent. The frame is also marked with Lawrence patent detail. Price for this piece of American Civil War/ Wild West history includes UK delivery. NB As an antique obsolete calibre carbine no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 11419:2
