South East MP40 9mm Submachine Guns
An early new specification deactivated WW2 German MP40 Submachine Gun by Steyr (BNZ), dated 1943. This is an example of a mid war MP40,. It is atamped 'MP40, bnz.43. The serial numbers are mismatched, the declared one behind the barrel nut being 3839. The gun comes with its deactivation certificate dated 23/12/1997. The gun has an overall length of 24 inches (61cm), with the barrel measuring 9 inches (23cm) long. It weighs 4 Kg. The gun is in decent condition, with numerous scratches to the body. It does not cock or dry fire. UK postage is £12 or it can be collected from our shop in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The German MP40 sub machine gun was descended from it?s predecessor, the MP38, which was in turn based on the MP36, a prototype made of machined steel. Unfortunately the MP38 was an expensive gun to manufacture, because at the time required machining. The MP40 was made from stamped steel parts, rather than machined parts. The result was that it was much cheaper to produce, and a weapon just as reliable. There were over 1million of these MP40s manufactured between 1940 and 1945! There were never enough MP40s to go around because raw material and labour cost made it expensive to produce alongside the K98 rifles. Starting in 1943 the German Army moved to replace both the K98 and the MP40 with the new MP44 assault rifle, also known later as the STG44. The MP40 operates from an open bolt blow back system. Fully automatic was the only setting, but the relatively low rate of fire allowed single shots with controlled trigger pulls. The gun was very sought after and was well respected. It is probably one of the most recognizable guns the Germans carried in WWII.
