Description

British 1796 Light Cavalry Sabre With Etched Blade & Scabbard. Sn 10023

The Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Sabre was used primarily by British Light Dragoons and Hussars during the Napoleonic Wars. The blade is remembered today as one of the best of its time and has been described as the finest cutting sword ever manufactured in quantity. Officers of the famous 95th Rifles, Light Infantry Regiments and the "flank" Companies of Line Regiments adopted these Swords (The Hit Napoleonic War, Book & TV series Sharpe's Rifles featured this pattern of Sword). This original 1796 Sabre is in nice condition. It has a single edged, fullered 33 1/2" Sabre blade (37 3/4" overall). The blade has staining consistent with age but no rust. The blade is faintly etched on both sides with foliate design and Crown Royal Cypher. The etching retains traces of it's original gilding. The hilt is fitted with original leather washer. It's cross guard, knuckle guard, pommel and leather covered wood ribbed grip are in great undamaged condition. The grips wire binding is tight. The Sabre is complete with it's original steel scabbard with 2 hanging rings. The scabbard has a couple of dents which is to be expected of a Sabre scabbard of this age, however, they do not detract from it's great overall appearance. Price for this sought after Sword and Scabbard includes UK delivery. Sn 10023
