~ A Victorian 9 pounder British Artillery Rifled Muzzle Loader (RML) "Armstrong" gun, circa 1870 ~
These were the standard Royal Horse artillery gun of the British artillery from 1870 to 1878.
It was a rifled muzzle loader (RML) firing a 9 pound & 12 ounces projectile to a maximum range of 4000 yards. The charge weighed 1 pound & 12 ounces, giving a muzzle velocity of 1330 feet per second. The gun could, if necessary, be manhandled by its detachment over difficult terrain.
The two stage barrel is cast with the V.R. crest, the war department broad arrow and has various other markings on its iron carriage.
The original iron carriage has two spoked wheels and a working elevation mechanism.
~ Dimensions ~
The two stage barrel has a length of 67.75 inches (172cm). On the carriage, the gun weighs approximately 9cwt.
~ Condition ~
The gun is in very good order with plenty of bronze fittings which will polish up a treat.
