WW1 Era Regiment Marked, Austro Hungarian Infantry Werndl M1867/77 11x58R Calibre Rotating Breech Loading Infantry Rifle. Sn 11079:7 - 11079:7

The M1867/77 Werndl rifle and carbines are a single-shot breech loading weapon adopted by the Austro-Hungarian army in 1867. The rifle was designed and patented by Josef Werndl (1831-1889) and Karel Holub (1830-1903); Werndl later bought out all the rights. The rifles were produced by OEWG (Österreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft), and chambered for the 11x58R cartridge. Some of these weapons were issued to Austro-Hungarian forces during World War I. The weapons have a distinctive rotating drum-action breech loader that can't easily be missed for anything else. When the hammer is drawn back the longitudinal drum breechblock is rotated on a central pin by means of a flat lever protruding from and integral with the drum. The drum has a section cut out to allow loading of a fresh round and, when loaded, the drum/ block is rotated back, the cut-out being replaced by the solid face of the block. The firing pin is located offset within the block. This is a nice obsolete calibre Model 1867/77 calibre Werndl Infantry rifle. It has all original metal work and wood stock. The wood has just the bumps and bruises to be expected with age & service use and the metal has even patina throughout. It is fitted with clearing rod, forward sling swivel, rear sling swivel lug, flip up rear ladder sight, block and blade foresight and steel butt plate. The heel of the butt plate is Regiment marked '59R.4B’ over ’13.95’. The top of the breech is marked Werndl and the top of the barrel is stamped with a partial faint 'St 70' mark. The side plate is stamped 'Lenz' above 3 unreadable letters or numbers. The rifle's 33 1/2" barrel is clean with crisp rifling. It measures 50 ½” overall and it's loading and firing actions work as they should. As an obsolete calibre antique rifle no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Price includes UK delivery. Sn 11079:7
