Description

1890 Dated, 1888 Mark II Wilkinson, Lee Metford Bayonet With 1903 Land Pattern Mark 1 Leather Scabbard with Integral Frog. Sn ED 2392 - ED 2392

This is an early Enfield, Lee Metford, 1888 Mark II Bayonet manufactured for the British .303 calibre Enfield, Lee Metford Rifle which were issued to British and allied forces during the Boer war and WW1. Most of this type wire made at Enfield (575,000) with contractors making only small quantities. The Bayonet blade which is in good clean condition with original polish, is 12" in length, double edged and unfullered with a medial ridge running from the ricasso to the blade tip. The ricasso of the blade is also marked '7 90' and a profusion if inspection marks on identifying the Bayonet to have been manufactured in July 1890. Also stamped is VR and 'Flat Top' Crown ( Victoria Regina) and Wilkinson, London. The reverse is nicely stamped with the broard arrow over WD. The grips are of wood, held together with two brass rivets. There is an oil clearance hole in both of the grips. The pommel carries the number 154 on it. The bayonet is contained in a later 1903 land pattern mark 1 leather scabbard with integral frog which stamped with Enfield 'EFD' inspection marks and War Department WD & Arrow. As with all of the 1888 and1903 pattern bayonets, they were interchangeable with this scabbard. See Skennerton item B213 page 168 and 169 and pages 182 and 183 for the scabbard. Price includes UK delivery. Sn. ED 2392
