WW2 BRITISH OFFICERS STAGHORN GRIP FAIRBAIRN SYKES WITH CONVERTED FS SHEATH USING 1944 PATTERN WEBBING & BAYONET FROG

A very interesting rare and unusual WW2 British Officers private purchase Staghorn Grip Fairbairn Sykes originally made by Swaine & Aldney Ltd. Military Outfitters of Piccadilly, London W1. It comes with a converted standard FS sheath using 1944 pattern webbing and is in overall nice condition.

Staghorn was prized for its gripping ability particularly in the constant wetness of the jungle but this meant every knife had to be hand made at some expense. The classic Swaine & Aldney Staghorn Grip Fairbairn Sykes is shown on page 73 of Ron Flook`s really excellent book " British and Commonwealth Military Knives". Please note we have the classic Swaine & Aldney for sale on Gun Star at the moment. However this one is different; it has a full sized pommell and a smaller grip compared to the usual S & A knife. Also note this knife has a parallel wider blade rather than the usual stilleto tapering blade.
The fine tip of the FS was often broken off and re-sharpened to a wider tip by Commandos for extra strength and this blade would have been constructed on that experience. Both the pommell and blade were obviously constructed to special order to suit a particular individual.
Blade length about 16.6 cm and overall length about 25.7 cm.
The sheath again is not the standard Swaine & Aldney knife sheath but a converted standard WW2 pattern of SF dagger sheath with the top half removed and British jungle green 1944 webbing and jungle green bayonet frog added ... a rather nice and attractive conversion.
Would say the knife is WW2 but the sheath added at a later period.
The knife is a nice tight fit in the sheath.
Some staining to the sheath and frog but otherwise nice condition and a very interesting and rare Swaine & Aldney.
