WW2 ROYAL NAVY OR MARINE COMMANDO BLACKENED BLADE CLASP KNIFE WITH RARE 1942 DATE STAMPED SHEFFIELD MADE & MANUFACTURER
Overall reasonably nice "Been There" used condition.
According to Ron Flooks Book these were first produced in 1940 and production continued until 1986 for exclusive issue to the British Royal Navy. However it is rare indeed to find one WW2 dated. Another unusual feature is that all the knives illustrated in Ron Flooks Book have plain steel blades, all the ones we have handled, and all the ones that have been offered on the collectors market were the same. However, this one the blade with a vintage blackened main blade and spike. The WW2 commando often used to blacken up reflective surfaces and for example blackened 1937 pattern webbing for night raids. This has obviously been blackened for tactical reasons and given the date RN or RM Commando use seems a logical explanation.
The main blade is about cm long. The main blade either has some slight pitting or it may be the blackening coating used on the blade.
Overall reasonably nice "Been There" used condition. The blade tip sticks out slightly when closed into the hilt. Also when opened there is some slight up/ down play on the blade... although the actual opening / closing movement of the blade is nice and stiff and would be able to ciut something without any movement,( All the used versions of this knife seem to have this slight up/ down play )The spike movement is also nice and stiff without fault.
