    !!!RESERVED!!!~ WW1 1914 Aircraft Lewis .303 Machine Gun by BSA ~

A 1914 Aircraft Lewis .303 fully automatic machine gun manufactured by BSA for Armes Automatiques Lewis Belgium.

The gun has numerous broad arrow and inspection marks across its entirety. The piece was converted by H. A. Atkins into the aircraft format from MKIV parts in 1941. Just 1000 were made.

The gun has several serial numbers including
A776 to denote this gun was mounted in an aircraft.

The gun is also marked 9527 on the rear sight and 5534 under the barrel.

The gun comes with a RARE FIRST PATTERN pan magazine, which is alone worth £600. We substitute this for a 2nd pattern one if you wish and take £400 off the price.

The Lewis gun entered service with British and Commonwealth forces in 1914. It was the first practical one man portable machine gun and stood up
well to the atrocious conditions of the western front. They were still in use in WWII, mostly with the Royal Navy and Air Force for aircraft such as the Fairey Swordfish.

The deactivation strikes are dated 1999. The certificate will be provided.

This gun cocks and dry fires with a good smooth action.

A similar one recently sold at auction for £7,800 plus commission, about £9,400 in total and that one didn't have a first pattern drum.

    ~ Condition ~

The gun is in good used condition. The metal has darkened and there is some wear to the surface but it is otherwise good. There are some bruises and light chipping to the wooden grips as expected through age and use.

    ~ Dimensions ~

The gun measures 40 inches (102cm) in total with the barrel measuring 27.5 inches (70cm) The gun weighs 8.58kg.

    ~ Postage ~

Postage costs £35 or the gun can be collected from our shop in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard....Read full description
