SOLD ~ Late 17th-Early 18th Century Ship Of The Line British Royal Navy Cannon ~

This is a 18 pounder semi-carronade ships cannon having the iron barrel constructed with six moulded turns/stages.

The 18-pounder long gun was an intermediary caliber piece of artillery mounted on warships of the Age of sail.
This gun was a heavy caliber for early the ships of the line. The Royal Navy used the 18-pounder on frigates, which carried 28 guns. Fourth rates ships carried 26 on their secondary batteries, and third rates carried 28. Unlike the French, the British used second rates, of 90 to 98 guns; the 90-gun vessels carried thirty 18-pounders on their middle deck, while the 98-gun vessels carried a total of sixty 18-pounders, distributed over both the second and the third deck. First rates carried thirty-four 18-pounders on their third deck and 24-pounders on the middle deck.

It must have had a long service history.

The barrel bears a probable "GR" cypher but the ring by the cascabel bears a date of 1645 (or 1655 - hard to make out the third digit).

    The trunnions are replacements.

    ~ Dimensions ~

    The barrel has a length 80 inches (2.03 m).

The width across the trunnion is 23 inches (58 cm).

The muzzle diameter is 5 inches.

The cannon weighs approximately 2.000 metric tons.

    ~ Condition ~

The cannon is in a typical condition for it's age with pitting. It is not a sea recovered piece and is quite stable.

It was acquired from a midlands militaria museum.

    ~ Transportation ~

We would prefer collection in person from Portsmouth Historic Dockyard but are happy to liase with your transportation requirements....Read full description
