~ A 1780 Signed And Dated Aikuchi Japanese Dagger ~

The Aikuchi is a form of Japanese dagger without the tsuba (guard) to facilitate close wearing with armor

The wooden saya (scabbard) is black lacquered and houses a Aikuchi knife with a gilt Japanese dragon handle.

The grip of the larger aikuchi dagger is made from rayskin covered in woven silk.

The blade is made in the 'Hira-Zukuri' style and the mune (blade back) is shaped in the 'Ihori' style.

The hamon finish is Gunome (zigzag).

The grain is Itame (wood grain).

The menuki on the right side is made of gilt brass and the one on the opposite side of blackened brass.

Its fuchiand and kashira are of cooper.

The habaki (blade locket) is made of copper as is the Kojiri (end-cap/chape) of the scabbard.

The scabbard is fitted with a cooper suspension ring.

The dagger is housed inside a wooden box, which has been lined with what appears to be a 1920’s Japanese newspaper.

~ Dimensions ~

The box has a width of 15 inches (38.1 cm), a depth of 2.6 inches (6.6 cm) and a height of 2.4 inches (6 cm).

The blade has a length of 9.5 inches (24.2 cm), the dagger has an overall length of 13 inches (33 cm) and is 13.5 inches (34.2 cm) long with scabbard attached.

The set weighs 720 g.

~ Condition ~

The blade remains extremely clean. The grip is excellent and the cooper fittings have only slight signs of oxide. The scabbard is complete with minor surface wear. The newspaper is worn. The box is in good order.
