~ 1788 Pattern Light Cavalry Sword, Officers Weapon ~

Here we have a very good quality light cavalry sword of the 1788 pattern used by the British army.

The sword is a sharply curved sabre with a deep fuller and a knucklebow guard.

The sword has been largely untouched leading to some age showing, the guard and scabbard fittings have all got some ageing and surface rust to them but what really makes this sword stand out is the definition of the etchings.

The etchings on the blade are exquisite with a prominent GR cipher, floral and vine work engraving surrounding several motifs. On either side of the blade there is a woman who appears to be bathing in a fountain. There is also the coat of arms for the British monarch and military motifs.

The hilt has lost its fishskin or leather cover exposing the wood but there is still some of the wire wrap.

The scabbard has both of its suspension rings and most of the leather covers to the wooden core.

The sword still has its leather wrist strap that is nice and supple.

    ~ Dimensions ~

The sword is 41.5 inches (105 cm) long.

The blade is 36 inches (91.5 cm) long.

    The sword weighs 1.85 Kg.

    ~ Condition ~

The sword is in quite good condition for its age.

The blade has some very minor pitting and age showing but the etchings on the blade are still very prominent.

The scabbard and guard have surface rust and some minor pitting.

The leather on the scabbard has been lost but for the most part is still covering the wooden core and is in good condition.

    ~ Postage ~

UK postage is £20, international at cost and it can be viewed in our shop.
