1793 British D. Wilson London Brown Bess Pattern Volunteer India Pattern .750” Musket Calibre Flintlock Musket. Sn 18512 - 18512

This musket was made by one of the longest running of the London gun making families. Richard Wilson from Kirkby Stephen in Westmorland founded the company in London in the 1730’s. Many of Wilson’s Colonial Brown Bess muskets ended up in the hands of American Militia Units during the American War Of Independence (1775–1783), such as the 3rd New Jersey Militia who are recorded as being armed with Wilson India Pattern Brown Bess muskets. 512 India Pattern Brown Bess muskets were made for the government between October 1803 and August 1805 for use in the war against Napoleon. The company ended trading in 1832. This is an original Volunteer India pattern Brown Bess flintlock musket by D. Wilson (most likely one of Richard Wilson's family members involved in the business). It measures 54 ¼” overall length with a 39” round steel barrel. The bore has staining & residue consistent with age & use. The barrel has numbers ‘SA1206’, ‘1173’ & ‘498’ together with what appears to be ‘MOIN’ most likely Regiment / Unit marks and armoury weapon numbers. The barrel has a block fore sight. It has its original lock plate which is crisply marked by the manufacturer ’D.Wilson’ & dated ‘1793’. It has its original walnut stock which has the knocks, bumps and bruises to be expected with age and service use and steel ram rod. The metal work in the white is clean. The stock is impressed with what appears to be ‘I / 5’. It has its regulation brass furniture including butt plate, trigger guard with extended tang, fore end block and ram rod mounts. It has a military hammer & the cocking and firing mechanisms work crisply. This historic musket is suitable is worthy of further research. The price includes UK delivery. N.B As an antique musket no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. Sn 18512
