~ 1796 Light Cavalry Sabre, Blue And Gilt Presentation Sword ~

Here we have an exceptional example of an officer’s 1796 light cavalry sabre. The 1796 was the brainchild of John Le Marchant, a British cavalry officer who thought a change to the sabres of eastern Europe was better for light cavalry, the 1796 light cavalry has a curved single edged wide fullered blade with a hatchet point.

The piece is highly worked and has a beautifully etched blade with an inscribed guard.

This sword was made by J. J. Runkell of Solingen and is in wonderful with much of the blue and gilt still on the blade.

The blade has been etched all the way across the bevel with a margin at the blade with the GR cypher of King George III as well as what may be decoration but looks like a unit or family motto.

The sword is beautifully balanced and handles wonderfully, the blade is thinner than a few but well within normal parameters. The blade seems to have seen service where the cutting edge gets thinner, appearing to have lost some mass to sharpening.

The back of the sword has been gilded and inscribed with the makers name ‘J. J. Runkell Solingen’.

The guard has been inscribes with ‘The Reward Of Patriotism, Loyalty And Spirit’.

The other side of the guard has what appears to be the initials ‘K.V’.

The grip is wire wrapped shagreen.

The hilt construction is solid with no movement.

The scabbard has had some damage with the seam coming lost in some parts and the throat not being fully fixed. The scabbard is an original or a period replacement and is very fragile.

The scabbard is black leather with a brass throat and chape.

The scabbard is inscribed with “R’ JOHNSTON late BLAND & FOSTER Sword Cutler & Blade Maker to his MAJESTY – 68 - St James’s Str London ~.

    ~ Dimensions ~

The blade is 32 inches (81cm) long.

The sword is 37 inches (94 cm) long.

The guard is 7 inches (18 cm) long at the widest point.

The sword in its scabbard is 37.75 (96 cm) long.

The sword in its scabbard weighs 1.17 Kg.

    ~ Condition ~

The sword is in brilliant condition for its age.

The blade is still looking wonderful with much of the blue and gilt on the blade and only some fading and scratches towards the tip.

The brass has developed a patina but still shows its lustre and engravings.

The scabbard is quite fragile and has lost its stitching, the leather is being held shut with its brass fittings which hold it securely.

The construction is solid and the wire wrapped grip has lost some colour but is original.

    ~ Postage ~

UK postage is £18 or the sword can be inspected in our shop.
