~ 17th Century Cavalrymans Mortuary Hilt Backsword ~

In the 17th century the sword of choice for the English soldier was the mortuary hilt. It has a transitional type of guard that came about after the swept hilt and before the basket. During the English civil war Parliament ordered thousands of these to equip the new model army many from German sword smiths in Essex. Called the mortuary because there was a myth that these were made to commemorate the death of the King, whilst the myth was dispelled the name stuck.

A type of sword that would form the evolution to the basket hilt, the mortuary hilt was a very versatile blade, used by cavalry and infantry, soldiery and civilian.

This blade is German made or produced by a German sword smith, the triple fuller is very prominent on some very well known Solingen blades in the Royal Collection and is a feature of this sword. That along with the notability of the Germans when producing the mortuary hilt is a good identifier.

The backsword is single edged and has a thicker spine, commonly with a false edge. This sword was used on horseback was a fearsome cut and thrust blade with a point to kill and an edge to cause havoc.

There is an affixed pommel so we are unsure whether this is of a screw or pinned construction.

    ~ Dimensions ~

The sword is 41 inches (105 cm) long in total.

The blade is 34.5 inches (88 cm) long.

The guard is 6 inches (15 cm) from back to front and 5.5 inches from side to side.

    The sword weighs 1 Kg.

    ~ Condition ~

For a sword almost 400 years old this is in brilliant condition.

You can still feel where the edge was, it hasn’t totally blunted.

There seems to be some surface rust on the inside of the guard.

The blade has blackened and has some very minor pitting.

There is some damage to the false edge and the tip.

The guard has a small dent on the right hand side.

One of the guards fittings to the pommel is missing.

    ~ Postage ~

UK postage is £25 or the sword is available for collection from our shop in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
