    ~1834-37, 1822 Pattern Named ~

    ~ Infantry Officers Sword ~

Here we have an 1822 pattern British infantry officer’s sword belonging to a Robert Henry S. Jackson of the 97th (The Earl Of Ulster’s) Regiment of Foot.

This officer in question was commissioned on the 10th of October 1834 and was promoted to Lieutenant on the 2nd of September 1837. This information was found on Harts Army Lists.

This sword was carried by R. Jackson during his time on British Ceylon with his first commission starting whilst the 97th was part of the Ceylon garrison.

This sword is a very nice standard 1822 pattern with a brass guard and a frost etched blade.

The sword has been well cared for, the frost etchings are in incredible condition and the cutting tip and false edge appear to have signs of sharpening, not too uncommon in Colonial Garrison duty.

The sword was made by Phillips and Sons of 13 Hannover Square London.

The sword has been proofed and has a very clear proofing lug, this sword was also serial numbered ‘2410’.

The sword retains its shagreen grip and its wire wrap is tight and though missing a lower section it has the guards inner leather cover.

The sword comes with its original scabbard, the scabbard comes with all its fittings, both suspension ring and the inscription ‘R. Jackson 97th’.

The guard and blade both bear the VR cypher.

    ~ Dimensions ~

The blade is 32 inches (81 cm) long.

The sword is 38 inches (96.5 cm) long.

The guard is 5 inches (12.5 cm) long.

    The sword weighs 1.18 Kg.

    ~ Condition ~

The sword is in brilliant condition for its age with some patina to the brass.

All the leather is still nice and supple.

The blade has a very few minor black spots but is in overall wonderful condition.

The leather guard under the brass bar guard has come loose.

    ~ Postage ~

UK postage is £18 or the sword can be inspeted in our shop.
