This bayonet was the common socket bayonet used by nearly every infantryman of the day. The blade has a slight downward curve to allow for easier reloading of the muzzle-loading Pattern 1853 rifle.
The blade has an oiled finish with several inspection marks to the ricasso.
The scabbard is of black leather with brass fittings.
The scabbard is marked to one end with number 587.
~ Dimensions ~
The bayonet in its scabbard measures 22 inches (56cm). The blade measures 17.5 inches (44cm). The piece weighs 445g.
~ Condition ~
The bayonet is in overall good antique condition. The blade has darkened as expected but the surface is overall good with some light pitting. The blade has been oiled. The socket is complete with its locking ring.
The scabbard is good with light wear to the leather. There is a small split to the leather just above the metal scabbard tip.
