~ 1858 Naval Enfield With Scabbarded Cutlass Bayonet ~

Here we have a good example of an Enfield 1858 Navy with its corresponding Cutlass Bayonet, these were an interesting and odd development of naval technology as they were manufactured more for practicality than actual need.

The naval Enfield that was designed especially for the Navy to have a shorter and more sensible rifled musket, along with this the bayonets designed to go with them were changed so the bayonets were made longer to negate needing to retrain the entire British Navy and also to cut down on space on ships by only having a cutlass and a musket rather than having an additional bayonet.

The musket was manufactured for the British military and is marked to 1861, the cutlass bayonet appears to have been manufactured in 1858 at the Solingen factories utilised by the British Army (more of these cutlass bayonets were made in Germany than in the British Isles) and has the bend and ‘N’ acceptance mark of the Navy.

The musket is marked with the queens crown and date of manufacture with rack and load numbers stamped on the barrel, the cutlass has its acceptance and testing marks.

Overall it is an incredible find to see a musket still with its cutlass bayonet and even more impressive to find one with its scabbard, this would be an excellent addition to any collection of Victorian nauticalia.

    ~ Dimensions ~

The musket is 49 inches (125 cm) long.

The barrel is 33 inches (84 cm) long.

The blade is 26 inches (66 cm) long.

The cutlass is 32 inches (81.5 cm) long.

    The set weighs 5 Kilos.

    ~ Condition ~

The set are in good condition for their age with some minor cosmetic dings to the wood and one section of wear to the blade of the cutlass where the spring or throat of the scabbard has worn the blade.

    ~ Postage ~

UK postage is £25 or it can be inspected in our shop.
