~ 1878 Pinfire American Made ‘The Guardian’ Revolver And Case ~
This is an American Model 1878 named ‘The Guardian’ as can be seen stamped on the cylinder.
The revolver has been imported and proofmarked in Belgium after 1894, as can be seen due to the stamp present on the left side of the frame underneath the cylinder.
It has a folding trigger and two wooden grips attached to the metal frame by a central screw.
The metalwork is chromed.
The double-single action revolver can be loaded or unloaded through a trapdoor on its right side.
The barrel is rifled.
It comes within a mahogany box lined with green velvet.
The hinged lid is decorated with a bras cartouche bearing the initials ‘JS’.
The box’s key is present and the lock is in good working order.
~ Dimensions ~
The barrel is 3 inches (7.5 cm) long and the overall length of the revolver is 6 ½ inches (16.5 cm).
The box is 9 inches (23 cm) long by 4 inches (10 cm) wide and 2 ½ inches (6.5 cm) tall.
The set weighs 820 grams.
~ Condition ~
The revolver has the expected wear but its overall condition can be described as good.
There is some loss of chrome on the cylinder and some on the frame, as can be seen in the pictures.
The grips are excellent.
The revolver is mechanically sound, it cocks and fires with a strong spring.
The rifling remains in good condition, free of rust or significant wear.
The interior of the cylinder is almost rust free and can be described as excellent for its age.
The box has minimum age wear on the outside but its age is more visible at the interior where the velvet lining has been attached back over the years by a less skilled hand.
As previously said the locking mechanism of the box works fine and the key is present.
