Description

1886 to 1903 J. STEVENS A & T CO Favorite Obsolete Calibre .32 Long Rim Fire No.21 Rolling Block Take Down Bicycle Rifle With External Hammer. Sn 19080 - 19080

Stevens guns were made at their plant in Chicopee Falls, Mass. From 1864 to 1886 their guns were marked J. STEVENS & CO. From 1886 to 1916 they were marked J. STEVENS A & T CO or J. STEVENS ARMS & TOOL CO. No Stevens firearms were manufactured from 1916 until 1920 when Savage Arms purchased the facilities and name. From 1920 until 1942 (or '48) Savage marked guns J. STEVENS ARMS CO and after that simply STEVENS or STEVENS/SAVAGE. The Stevens name was discontinued in 1991. This is an original J. STEVENS A & T CO No. 21 BICYCLE RIFLE. These short take down rifles had 20" barrels and were advertised as being perfect for cyclists. The rifles were sold with a case that would fit perfectly into the frame of a standard size bicycle (see image of contemporary advert illustrated). These Bicycle rifles were produced between 1898 to around 1903. This is a nice original example of the breech loading rolling block take down J. STEVENS A & T CO No. 21 Bicycle rifle. It has the correct 22” round to octagonal barrel with a clean bore and crisp rifling. It measures 36 ¾” overall. Its ‘take down' mechanism is achieved by unscrewing the sling swivel lug on the underside of the action. All wood and metalwork have even patina. The top of the barrel is crisply marked ‘J. STEVENS A. & T. CO. CHICOPEE FALLS MASS U.S.A. PAT APR.17 94’ (illustrated, indicating manufacture between 1886 to 1903) and one of the barrel flats ’32 Long’ (calibre). The cocking, firing, take down and rolling block actions work perfectly. The chequered butt pate has Steven’s Favorite banner. It has a brass blade fore sight & adjustable rear sight. As an antique obsolete calibre rifle no licence is required to own this item in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 19080
