~ An 18th Century Spontoon with Gilt Crown and "G.R" initials to the blade and a profusely studded shaft ~
This type of weapon would have been carried by infantry sergeants or Royal Marines throughout the 17th and 18th centuries.
~ Dimensions ~
The blade measures 12inches(30cm) long from the tip to the cross bar. The whole head of the spontoon measures 16.5inches (32cm) from the tip to the top of the wooden shaft. The spear measures 65inches (165cm)long with the broken off section adding another 7 inches (18cm) to the overall length.
~ Condition ~
The spontoon has suffered from woodworm damage which has resulted in a piece breaking off the end of the
The blade itself has some pitting and nibbling on the edge of the blade but the initials and crown remain. The gilding is recent but conforms to the original impressions.
